Blue dye might help paralysis in the future

Paralysis is one of those injuries that can be disheartening to a person. His body will not be able to function properly anymore if he has such condition. Normal or daily activities are lessened because of this.

Paralysis can be caused by serious brain or nervous system damage. Several conditions like trauma, stroke, botulism, multiple sclerosis to name a few may also cause paralysis. Even poison can trigger it because it interferes with nerve function in the body.

Recently, according to CBS news medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton, there is a new treatment that might become a possible cure for acute spinal injuries. Each year in America, there are about 12,000 new paralysis cases.

Surprisingly she said during CBS’ The Early Show that the coating used by blue M&Ms and, yes, the blue Gatorade might be it. The University of Rochester researchers said the non-toxic blue food dye (or BBG) can “stop the cascade of molecular events that causes secondary damage to the spinal cord in the hours following an injury—and the interruption could prevent paralysis.”

It can also help reduce secondary injuries around the primary spinal cord injury. With spinal cord injury, the swelling is the major cause of the problem. And according to Rochester University’s research, it can cause “less waste and less zone of injury” on the spinal cord.

When a patient has a spinal cord injury, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is highly produced. It binds to receptors thus triggering irreversible cell death. And as a result leads to swelling.

But the research showed the dye’s temporary side effect. When it was injected on the rats, they had slight bluish tints on their white fur and paws. Although they were able to recover most of their limb functions and even began walking again—albeit limping.

It might bring hope to patients in the future once it is perfected. Another limit is it should be done within hours of the injury.

Paralysis injury claim

Paralysis injury claims usually involve accidents such as slip and fall, elevator accidents or a car crash. What are the legal steps or way to claim compensation for paralysis?

1. Injury should be diagnosed by a qualified doctor (MRI or CT scan)
2. Know if the paralysis injury is:
• Contusion
• Compression
• Direct injury / Laceration
• Loss of sensation
• Loss of reflex
• Sensitivity to touch
• Pain

3. Undergo a physical or occupational injury; respiratory therapy; have a speech language pathologist and a nutritionist; talk to a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

You do have legal rights… Remember that!

When to sum the facts of life, the bad and the good things will bubble up along with the joy and the grief ness affiliated to it. In any manner a number of us have been engaged in accidents that cause us to suffer slight and serious personal injuries. Practically the personal injury claims are bound to be made when the accident has taken place and has been remaining the cause of suffering for others as per the law and the attorneys.

Personal Injury cases happen on the basis of the scenarios like automobile accidents, medical mal practice, slip and fall accident and to say further it can incorporate the birth injury case as well. The hazardous road with the excessive traffic has become more common for the car accident. This injury occurs when a car behind the people hits from behind standing at the road or in the traffic signal. This creates a fast forward jerk to the car and the victim’s body is thrown forward. People may get aching and pain in the shoulders, headaches, ringing in the ears etc. Some cases can be quite severe and the pain might linger for more than a few weeks. Some people might need to take time off work and this is where suing with the help of the Florida Accident Lawyers for damages might help recover some of the financial loss.

Once you go into the details of the case numerous minute details, which initially seemed insignificant and unrelated to the case, become crucial facts that may have major impact on the final outcome. Florida Lawyers, of your state of residence, will be the only legally qualified and competent person to handle these particulars of the legal system. Prior experiences in dealing with similar cases have acquainted a Personal Injury lawyer with the legal technicalities that is involved in any such case. It would be impossible for any prosecutor to take hold of the legalities involved and the victim’s family or victim himself would definitely not be in a state to fight their own case under such circumstances.
[ad#ad-2-1]
Florida injury lawyers can be the victim’s best resort in such circumstances. Hence it is advisable to choose the most competent lawyer to fight your case and get you the compensation and justice which you deserve. Before hiring the service checking into the track record of the Personal Injury lawyer would be of supreme importance.

People with serious spinal cord injuries are understandably anxious and eager to find some treatment that will improve their condition. Does stem cell transplantation currently offer a realistic hope of improving the functional or pain le…

Spinal cord injuries can be caused by trauma to the spinal column (stretching, bruising, applying pressure, severing, etc… the spinal cord). The vertebral bones or intervertebral disks can shatter, causing the spinal cord to be punctured …

Dr. Hongyun Huang transplants OEG cells obtained from the brains of aborted fetuses into patients at Xishan Hospital near Beijng, China. While the OEG cells Dr. Hwang uses are not obtained from the patient, he reports that there have not been problems with rejection. To qualify for surgery the patient cannot have a complete transection (separation) of the spinal cord (a rare occurrence). Dr. Huang has performed the procedure on hundreds of patients and claims there has been some improvement in 70% of the individuals operated on. The length of time from the date of spinal cord injury to surgery has ranged from six months to 18 years. Treatment cost is about $20,000 (excluding travel costs and lodging) and the average stay in China is about one month. There have been some complaints from patients who have traveled to China about the quality of Chinese hospitals. Dr. Huang originally operated at Chaoyang Hospital but has since moved to Xishan Hospital, apparently at least in part due to complaints about the quality of Chaoyang Hospital. .

A different approach to the use of olfactory cells has been taken by a team headed by Drs. Tim Gerahty and Alan McKay-Sims at Princess Alexandria Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. They remove olfactory tissue from the patient and then culture it to grow additional cells. The cells (around 12,000,000) are then injected into the area of the injury. The injections do not require surgery. Some researchers question whether cells injected into the spinal cord will remain in the area of injury, given that cerebrospinal fluid bathes the cord and can wash the cells to other parts of the central nervous system, including the brain. The Brisbane team limited the patients in their small study (8 patients) to individuals with complete spinal cord injuries in the thoracic area that are six months to three years old. Results of their study, which began in 2001 and was scheduled to end in 2004, have not been published.

What Country has the best treatment for stem cell research regard…?

On March 9, 2009, President Barack H. Obama issued Executive Order 13505: Removing Barriers to Responsible Scientific Research Involving Human Stem Cells. The Executive Order states that the Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Director of NIH, may support and conduct responsible, scientifically worthy human stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research, to the extent permitted by law.

These Guidelines implement Executive Order 13505, as it pertains to extramural NIH-funded stem cell research, establish policy and procedures under which the NIH will fund such research, and helps ensure that NIH-funded research in this area is ethically responsible, scientifically worthy, and conducted in accordance with applicable law. Internal NIH policies and procedures, consistent with Executive Order 13505 and these Guidelines, will govern the conduct of intramural NIH stem cell research.

Enabling people with physical disabilities to gain access to all areas is now an essential part of anti discrimination laws, and all business owners need to ensure that they take all appropriate steps to ensure that access is possible wherever required or face severe penalties. Providing consideration to the physically challenged is more and more important thanks to the increasing numbers of disabled people in the workforce.

I, and although they can be expensive to install, they allow staff complete access to areas where they need to be, and therefore boost productivity thanks to staff being able to properly enter all areas of the building and make use of facilities without any restrictions.

There are many different designs of wheelchair lifts available on the market, and all of them have specific uses, but the key for maximizing effectiveness is to opt for a design that best fits with the requirements of the environment it is to be installed in, while also ensuring that it is simple to use, and safe for other workers nearby.

The most effective wheel chair lifts offered feature all the ergonomic innovations that you would expect, and are reliable and hard working as you are. The standard model we offer provides smooth and powerful action that raises wheel chair users up to 36 inches at the touch of a button. Ideal for providing access without the need to use a ramp up a short set of steps, the wheel chair lift has a number of different safety features as standard that ensure that users are fully protected when using the lift to negotiate the stairs.

On operation, a lip is automatically raised at the back of the wheel chair lift to prevent the user from accidentally rolling off backwards and potentially injuring themselves. The lift will also stop automatically on descent if it detects that something is trapped underneath it, preventing injury to bystanders. The standard load capacity of the lift is 750 pounds, meaning that it can easily cope with all normal situations, and thanks to the powerful 2 horse power electric motor, and back up batteries to ensure operation in a power cut; it is designed with safety and reliability under all circumstances at the highest priority.

Although you may not have previously considered accessibility issues in your workplace, existing and planned legislation is increasingly placing the onus on business owners to provide full access to their premises to disabled users, and this is universally applied. Aside from the legal requirement, there is also a moral reason for ensuring that all staff are treated equally by the business, and this should be just as important when planning your business’ disability strategy to comply with all of your requirements to ensure universal access to facilities.

To provide access to areas for wheelchair users, having a system of lowered curbs, concrete ramps and smoothed out pathways is an essential consideration of your outdoor and indoor areas, but these are design changes and must be implemented at the planning stage of construction. IF you want to provide immediate access to an area where there has not been previous thought given to providing access, then an alternative must be implemented, and this can be accomplished with the installation of wheel chair lifts.

The most common causes of traumatic spinal injuries are: automobile and motorcycle accidents slips and falls, plus accidents during sports, such as football or diving, violent crime. A spinal injury is a catastrophic injury that radically changes the life of the victim and those who love him or her. Spinal cord injury is the 2nd leading cause of paralysis. Spinal injuries are a rare but potentially devastating consequence of participation in many activities – snow sports included. Having a spinal cord injury is difficult enough for many people, presenting all sorts of obstacles, and showing people successfully negotiating these obstacles is more positive than showing the lives of those who are less successful. They make the point though that, amongst serious snow sports injuries, spinal injuries are third commonest after head and abdominal injuries and may lead to permanent disability.

Statistics reveal that about 450,000 people in the united states suffer from spinal cord injury and every year about 11,000 new spinal injuries are added to the list. Head and spinal injuries are difficult to assess until swelling recedes.

Spinal injuries: Some common forms of spinal injuries are those that relate to the spinal discs. Spinal cord injury is an equal opportunity injury. Living with a spinal cord injury is risky business. The international standards for neurological and functional classification of spinal cord injury is a widely accepted system describing the level and extent of injury based on a systematic motor and sensory examination of neurologic function. Spinal cord injury rehab is critical and necessary for the injured.

The medical costs and other expenses incurred when a spinal cord injury is suffered are enormous. Living with a spinal cord injury is not an easy thing to do, and if you did not consult a personal injury attorney, you may be having a very difficult time paying bills and getting therapy. A spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that results in a level of loss of function. The big difference in adapting after spinal cord injury is that it is a one way street: people who have a spinal cord injury are expected, demanded, to adapt. Recovery from a spinal cord injury is expected in the first 6 months after the accident.

A spinal cord injury is very serious because it can cause paralysis below the site of the injury. It’s very difficult to accurately assess if a spinal cord injury is complete or incomplete until the secondary trauma(s) manifest themselves in order to clarify any potential diagnosis. Many people make the mistake of thinking a complete spinal cord injury is the result of a cord being severed or broken.

Inevitably, however, spinal injury superimposes special considerations on the routine activities and passages of life, and activities that might once have been easy can in many cases become increasingly difficult. This book identifies medical and nonmedical problems that individuals with SCI face as they get older, while providing practical advice on how to tackle these challenges. Includes information on

* health

* finances

* social support system

* the effects of aging

Description:
This study reports on trends in spinal cord injury based on the Australian Spinal Cord Injury Register (ASCIR), which provided full coverage in those aged 15 years and over. The underlying annual rate of change from 1986 to 1997 was calculated for age-specific, crude and age-standardised incidence rates. An appropriate model for this type of data was the Poisson regression model, with a Poisson error distribution, a log link function and the natural log of population treated as an ‘offset’. It was found that there was no change in the age-standardised rate of spinal cord injury. However, an assessment of specific rates by age, sex, cause and neurological group revealed some contrasting trends, notably declining rates in young males, transport-related injury and complete tetraplegia, and increasing rates in elderly males, fall-related injury and incomplete tetraplegia and complete paraplegia. These changes are considered to reflect the impact of a raft of public health measures directed at transport-related injury but a paucity of prevention programs directed at fall-related spinal cord injury. More research is required to determine the causes of the increasing rate of elderly male fall-related spinal cord injury. There is also more that can be done to prevent transport-related spinal cord injury. Sport utility vehicles pose an increased concern. In order to reinvigorate the debate about the need for a vehicle rollover resistance rating in Australia, the spinal cord injury risk of different models of SUV should be measured. This has already been implemented in the United States, providing the public with information to assist purchasing based on safety considerations.
